Stainless Steel Welding: What You Need to Know Before Your Project
Stainless steel is one of the most requested materials for custom projects, and for good reason. It’s corrosion resistant, hygienic, strong, and it looks clean without needing paint or coatings. But welding stainless is a different animal than welding mild steel, and the process demands more from both the welder and the shop. Here’s what you should know if you’re considering a stainless steel project.
Why Stainless Steel Is Harder to Weld
Stainless gets its corrosion resistance from chromium content (typically 10.5% or higher). When you weld it, excessive heat can cause that chromium to bond with carbon and migrate away from the surface—a process called sensitization. This creates a zone near the weld that’s actually less corrosion resistant than the base metal, which defeats the purpose of using stainless in the first place.
To avoid this, stainless steel welding requires tighter heat control, proper shielding gas coverage (typically pure argon or argon/helium blends), and in many cases back-purging with argon to protect the backside of the weld from oxidation. TIG welding (GTAW) is the standard process because it gives the welder the most precise control over heat input.
Common Grades: 304 vs 316
Most custom projects use either 304 or 316 stainless. Grade 304 is the general-purpose option—it handles most indoor applications, architectural elements, and moderate outdoor exposure. Grade 316 adds molybdenum for significantly better resistance to salt, chemicals, and marine environments. If your project involves exposure to road salt (relevant in Michigan winters), chemical processing, or coastal conditions, 316 is usually worth the additional cost.
Both grades weld well with the right filler rod (typically 308L for 304 base metal and 316L for 316 base metal). The “L” designation means low carbon, which helps reduce the sensitization issue mentioned above.
What to Expect on Cost and Timeline
Stainless projects take longer and cost more than comparable mild steel work. The raw material is more expensive, the welding process is slower (TIG vs MIG), and the prep and cleanup requirements are stricter—stainless must be kept separate from carbon steel tools and surfaces to prevent contamination that can cause surface rust.
On the flip side, stainless doesn’t require painting or coating for most applications, which can offset some of the upfront material cost over the life of the piece. A stainless handrail or equipment frame will look and perform the same in ten years as it does the day it’s installed, with minimal maintenance.
